Third graders have been exploring a variety of drawing types to prepare for a drawing inspired by the painter Grandma Moses. Grandma Moses was a self taught painter, who started painting when she was in her late 70’s. She often times painted landscapes that included people participating in activities. These paintings were often a combination of observation, memory, and imagination, and third graders are exploring those types of drawings while creating their landscapes.
To learn more about and explore observation drawing we took a class session to draw the landscapes details outside our classroom door. Everyone did a really great job staying engaged, especially considering it was recess for another grade level!
