Still Life – Observation Drawing – Grade 4 (Room 18)

At the start of this unit, grade 4 artists were asked How do you draw what you see? and How do artists show space in their drawings? to get them to really think about observation drawing as well as ways to create the illusion of a 3D space.
Since this is a new skill, they’ve spent a number of classes practicing drawing a variety of still life objects.  Grade 4 artists have also learned that there are some techniques, or ‘tricks’ artists use to create the illusion of 3D space.  Those three techniques are relative size, placement on page, and overlapping.  This animation from The Artists Toolkit illustrates these three techniques very clearly.
If you visit Conant in the coming weeks, be sure to check out the bulletin boards near 4th grade.  Some of these practice drawings will be going on display very soon!
